Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - At the begining of July, the nonprofit debt management firm A New Horizon Credit Counseling had taken unprecedented steps to alleviate consumer debt; citing worries about the uptick in the national joblessness rate, it started enrolling clients for totally free - and offering them $100 just for joining there debt management program.
The company, that's a nationwide nonprofit debt management organization, helps consumers with credit card debt by renegotiating interest rates and consolidating their high balances. In early July, citing recent disappointing economic indicators, the organization instituted its temporary "Win-Win Program," which allows clients to join totally free and pays them $100 to start their debt repayment after they enroll.
According to Stephen Marcus, president of A New Horizon Credit Counseling, the program was originally developed to run for just one month. However, faced with a deluge of interested clients, the company plans to carry on the program for an additional month. "We've had a lot of new clients inform us how delighted they were to receive not only the long-term benefits of our program, but immediate assistance with their bills in the form of the signing bonus of sorts," said Marcus. Marcus feels that his credit counseling organization is a first to offer this kind of program.
The firm, which also gives financial literacy education and community outreach, has experienced a surge in new consumers as most economic recovery indicators have stagnated. "People are really battling in order to make ends meet," said Marcus, "and hopefully this program can provide people with a clear path toward alleviating their debt problem." Experts observe that nonprofit debt management could possibly help for people struggling to repay their bills, however caution that consumers should look for help before they find themselves in default.
